Old Man Winter
If you've heard any of my conversations with WeatherEye meteorologist Derrick Heit, you know that I'm not all that thrilled about winter coming. I don't mind winter. Being from Wisconsin, you better not mind. But all I want is anything but the winter we had last year. I don't think I'm asking for much.
All it did was snow, snow, snow, and then it would stop for five minutes... and then it would snow again. It snowed so much I started to yell at the snow, telling it to stop and go somewhere else. Have you ever had to climb on top of your garage and sweep off the snow so the roof of the garage doesn't cave in? That was me last year. You every had to snowblow your driveway three times in one day to just be able to get out? That was me last year. Did you ever get into the habit of counting how many cars went off the road while you're out driving? That was me last year.
The Old Farmers' Almanac says we're going to get an as bad or worse winter than last year. Imagine my joy. Some people enojy a lot of the white stuff. And I do like winter. Just not a super-sized type winter. Better get your boots, gloves, and snow shovels ready. This could get interesting.

HI-Tech Gadgets
It's been a while since I've posted anything up so I decided to blow off the cyberdust on this thing and get you caught up on what going down.
Technology is all around and there's no escaping it. I'm now hip deep in it. Within the past few months, I bought a new computer that is one step below what those hardcore gamers use, an iPod that had as much room on it as my old computer, a flash drive that is a mini hard drive that I can take anywhere I want to go. And on Friday I got a brand new cell phone.
It's a Samsung Glide from Verizon. It's got a touch screen with a slide-out keyboard for texting, camera and camcorder, build-in navigation, and other things I have no idea how it works.
I've always said on "The BIg Show" that modern technology is something else. About ten some odd years ago, none of this existed. The technology in my cell phone would've taken up an entire room. Every day this stuff is getting smaller, faster, and more powerful. Is it helpful? Yeah... but every once in a while I miss the days when all you had was a book, the outdoors, your imagination, and the occasional Atari 2600 video game. That's not asking too much, is it?

Thank you very much!!
Thanks to everybody calling in to participate in the "Beatles Song Of The Day". I expected it to go over well but not like the way it did. When I played the Song Of The Day, the phones lit up non-stop until I annouced Caller #9's name. Congrats to all of our winners. And if you didn't win, thanks for trying. But that doesn't mean you still can't go to the show. Call up the Young Auditorium in Whitewater to get your tickets for "Revolution" on October 4th. I plan on being there and I hope to see you there as well.

It's been busy
It's ben a while since I wrote a blog on here so I'll give you the short short version because I'll be writing until next week with all the stuff going on.
Summer's winding down and a hint of autumn is in the air. I still think I'm owed one month of great weather for missing July thanks to the floods.
We've got some new folks at the radio ranch and I've been helping out making them feel at home. I'm so glad I'm not the "new guy" around here anymore.
The Packers are 2 and 0 and Arron Rodgers is doing a heck of a job. The big test comes Sunday night (21st) against the Cowboys. Take the over/under. It's going to be a shootout at Lambeau.
Thanks for the emails. It's good to hear from the people. In case you want to but don't know the address: jryan@nrgmedia.com. Don't be shy. I'd love to hear from you.
The presidental elections are in high gear. Learn what the canidates are promoting. Educate yourself and vote for what you think is right in November.
Gotta get going. The Big Show is about to start. Thanks for listening... and for reading.

That Song Is In My Head
I'm sitting here at my desk and for some reason, I'm singing Christmas songs. It's a beautiful day, blue skies, the sun is shinning and I'm humming The Chipmunks "Christmas Don't Be Late". I don't know why. It just popped in there. Have you ever had a song that for no reason just came to you and you started to hum it? The human mind is a strange thing.
That's really all I got. And if you get a tune stuck in your head today, blame me. It's all my fault.

Preseason Football
I don't take too much stock in preseason football. By the second half, you've got guys who are fifth, sixth, and seventh stringers fighting it out against guys who are going to go back to bagging groceries by the end of the week. Wins and losses don't matter at this point. All I'm concerned about is that nobody gets hurts before the games that count start.
With that said, I've got to comment here about the Brett Favre/Packers "divorce". I know you're probably sick and tired of hearing, reading, watching, be all-consumed with the story so I'll keep it short and sweet. I said it on the air and I'll say it here. It's everybody's fault. Brett's fault and the Packers' fault. It should of never have come to where it is now. We'll never know all that happened behind closed doors but sooner or later the rest of the story, as radio legend Paul Harvey always says, will come out.
I watched the game last night and I was impressed with Arron Rodgers at quaterback. With Brett, you got used to him under center because he was always there. 16 years straight. Now it's a new era. Back the Pack is all I've got to say. Be a true fan and not a bandwagon jumper because of one guy. Although, that Jets #4 jersey does look kind of cool. Could be a Christmas present for yours truly.

Storms & Radio Don't Mix
Ever since I started in this business way back when, I've always hated storms. Not the storms themselves, because when Mother Nature decides she wants to do something, she's going to do it whether you like it or not. I'm talking about being in the middle of a storm at a workplace where your whole livelihood revolves around having electricity to do your job.
I've been on the receiving end of some wicked weather where I was the only person at the radio station. At night. When everyone else is asleep. I've lost complete power in the whole building, got knocked of the air repeatedly. Had nothing but weather warnings throughout my entire show. I was on the air the night of the Stoughton tornado and was powerless to do anything about it other than to keep saying "Take cover!" To which a woman called up to tell me, "The tornado's hitting the Wal-Mart!" And to which I respond, "Get out of the way, then!"
During the floods, my previous station was knocked off the air, not by the flood waters, but by a branch that hit a power line that took out power in half the city. And I'm not even going to get into the time that some knucklehead tried to run over a power transformer with his car that left us with minimal power for most of the day.
But it is a good thing that someone is on the air to handle the emergencies that come up when a storm hits. To keep people informed about what's going on, where's the storm going, and what can happen... knowing full well that we could easily get hit just like everyone else. I knew the job was dangerous when I took it, so I can't complain. No regrets but some great stories to share on a rainy day.

Just Like Old Times
I was able to go to the Rock County Fair last night and was able to get together with the old gang and hang out. Even though I still see them quite a bit, it's not like it was before. Of course we're all busy with our own stuff but it was nice to be able to just kick back and have a good time like always.
It was very weird walking the ground of the fair and knowing that I could just enjoy the fair and not have any work to do there. It was the first time in five years I was able to just walk around and take in the sights, sounds, and yes, the smells of the fair without having th report to this place at this time to do this job.
However, I was "ordered" to go see Dr. Wheeler and have one of his amazing pork chop sammiches and a Diet Pepsi. It was so good I had two Diet Pepsi's. It hit the spot and rubbed it out. And I was able to catch up with my boy Sugar and plan our next golf outing. Multi-tasking has it's advantages.
Like I said before, I talk to the guys and gals all the time but it's different now. Close by but separated. The bottom line is that by taking that next step, there's always going to be some negatives out of a big positive. And those negatives are a little tough to take at times. But the positive part makes the sacrifice worthwhile.

A Lazy Weekend
Having the majority of my weekend free is a new concept for me. I'm used to working all hours of Saturday and Sunday. Trying to jam as much work as possible into two days is like trying to jam ten pounds of "stuff" into a five pound bag, if you know what I mean. It's just a good thing to get to be able to recharge the physical and mental batteries that we burn out during the week. But how we do that is up to that particular person.
Some folks will work in their backyard,
some of them go to the baseball yard.
Some sit down to watch the NASCAR race,
while others tend to stay in place.
Some will clean a mess house,
and some will chase a pesky mouse.
Folks will stand around and drink a few,
while brats and burgers cook on the barbeque.
All are different in our own special way,
to take advantage of every available day.
Just remember these words, for pete's sake,
Even the busiest of us need to take a break.
Bottom line... enjoy time off when you get it.
